My Message

Last year I was able to go to Guatemala and witness first hand the impact a lack of water has on not only the daily lives, but future of women, children and families. I was completely heart-broken from one family visit where three little girls who lived less than 10 minutes away from school could not attend because they needed to help their mother fetch water. As a public school teacher I could not help but compare them to the children I work with daily. While I don't wish for anyone I know to be worse off, it puts into perspective how much we take for granted. The most difficult reality of this story was that even though these people were spending much of their day fetching water, this water was no cleaner than a puddle. Meaning, these individuals are faced with all sorts of other hazards; such as, dehydration from diarhea and other water-borne illnesses. The best solution is to provide these indigenous Guatemalan communities with the infrastructure for clean water that can be maintained over time.

One of my highlights from the same trip was visiting an alternate community that was close to completing a water project that was started a year ago. HOPE works with a local organization to train the locals within their community to build and maintain the water projects that go in.

Please join me in making a difference today!
